Firebird English Translation

Topic: Translations

BiFi has created a translation patch for the MSX2 shooter Firebird in collaboration with MSX Translations. Set in 8th century Japan, this game puts your and Gao’s courage to the test to defeat his demons. The game now has bigger text windows to accommodate longer texts. Not only the texts have been translated but the kanji on gates and items have been changed to icons. Aside from the complete translation of the game, there are some optional patches:

 • A Turbo patch correcting some minor slowdowns and speeds up screen transitions
 • A fix for a tablet dropped in stage 4 to correct it to the proper colors
 • A patch which enables you to save to Game Master 2 SRAMdisk instead of cassette when you combine Firebird, King Kong 2 and Game Master 2

Look here for a preview video.

So, I was right about at least one of the secret projects that are the great hobby of MSX Translations, contrary to an answer on 18/09/13 :

Let's not forget that Django was the first to translate Hinotori, it could have been mentioned in the news ...

Mars2000: actually back in 18/09/2013 there was no work being done on Firebird at all. We didn't know it would be released at this time either. All of the work was in 2014 so it was no smoke and mirrors back then.

The first translation I made for Hinotori was back in 2003. Some of the current icons even stem from that version. But a lot of others I didn't like enough. And I wasn't able to create the extra space for the texts I wanted by myself. That's why (amongst other reasons) it got shelved.

Django's full translation is quite nice too and if people want to play that, more power to you. Why it was not on the news (wasn't it?) I wouldn't know...

The project we were talking about back then is a project someone else did actually guess back then and he knows he did. That project is soon to be announced.

@max_iwamoto

Ok, thanks for the explanation. Smile

I was a bit confused because:

1) It will require 3 cartridges to be connected at the same time. In most MSX models, that means a slot expander will be needed

2) When GM2 is used together with KK2, GM2 can save/load states directly.

Do you have patched the good rom ? It must be the rom in the GoodMSX package with the mx2 extension.

There is another bug in the beginning of Level 5.
When you touch the first firebird-statue on your right a message appears.
Normally you can continue by pressing the space bar.
Nothing happens, the text box doesn't disappear.
But the music keeps playing.

I don't recommend to test with the original passwords IPS, because I've simply re-introduced the original passwords in their original code zone.

Obviously, the zone of these data has been moved to another place in the BiFi translation, as code has been added to include the statue texts. So, my IPS patch has as effect to 'delete' part of this new code and to provoke at least the first mentioned problem.

The file is no more on line. Max, can you please remove the link to this file ? Thanks.

Hi everyone, I'm looking forward to experiencing FIrebird in English for the first time. I guess I missed out on this classic. : )

Just one small issue I've run into, I was attempting to patch the Hinotori.rom with the 3 different IPS patches and I don't think I had success. I applied the patches in this order, using the IPS patcher program called Lunar IPS. I first did the EN patch, then the Turbo patch (since I'm running this on a Turbo R GT) and then lastly the KK Fix patch. Unfortunately this results in an unplayable rom that when I try to flash it to either the MegaFlashRom or MegaFlashRom SD. Oddly it finds it to be using an R-Type mapper by default, whereas the original uses the Konami mapper. I can force these settings such as using /K4 to make it a Konami Mapper type and it will write it, but it won't run when I boot up the MSX.

Is my patching process incorrect? Perhaps Lunar IPS is not a good program for this?

Thanks for your help!

So I wasn't able to get Game Master 2 to recognize my configuration with the slot expander for having King Kong 2 and Firebird, and I think I've tried just about every configuration imaginable so I may have to shelve that project for now. It could also be that I just don't understand how the Cartucho Slot Expander is supposed to work exactly too. Also, is there something special one has to do to get MSX-Audio to work? I have Firebird in Slot 1 and the Music Module with Updated Bios ver 1.3 in Slot 2 and I don't hear anything when doing audio out to the television.

I don't know for Firebird, but I do have a version of Parodius where I did this. More than 20 years ago I rewrote the loader and converted the whole game into a single file. Effectively, this was what we call a ROM file today with a custom loader. I could apply the Parodius translation patch to this file. I didn't work out of the box, because the cracked ROM file had a few changes and the patch would overwrite them. But they were just a few bytes and I could simply set those back to their cracked values. That's how I got a translated Parodius that loads from disk.

The FIREBIRD English translated ROM has the passwords stored as 16-bit hash codes.
I wrote a little utility to 'unhash' them.
These are the results.
I've tested them and work!

Pause the game pressing F1, then press HOME

Original password Translated password Effect
- SUPERBALL 13OY all round balls
- KINOOOIHITODANE 188Z all doors open
- HANEYOKAGAYAKE 1FY3 feathers are worth x10
- ULTRABOX 0JF8 9 storage boxes
- TURBO 17MP walk faster
- METALSLAVE 3VEO 200 feathers for buying weapons
- HOIHOIHOINOHOI 29QJ infinite compasses
- FULLITEMDAYOON 1HR2 have one of each item
- GAOOOOOOOOOOH 06S4 10 extra lives
- ENDDEMOGAMITAINA 1Z1M the end demo
- AAAAA 07S2 debug mode
- KOKOWADOKO 37PF view stage map with F4

- AUTOSHOT 0LUV automatic fire
- ILOVEHINOTORI 0JLH Invulnerable
- DOKODEMOMAP 0CG3 map with F5

Very nice,
I remeber fiddling with these password hashes back then,
there were multiple results for the same password if I remember correctly ?

For example these passwords allso work:
KUE = TURBO
OWL = SUPERSPHERES
SMO = TURBO
WOF = SUPERSPHERES

You can use the

blocks to post code [SHIFT] + [ALT] + [D] ....
Or a link to GitHub would also work

Looking forward to see your code.
