Tecnobytes is back with a brand new OPL4 kit for your computer.

  • Design
    The OPL4 SHOCKWAVE 2 is smaller than its predecessor and fits in a small cartridge case.
  • Output
    As the new size will not accept the RCA connectors, it will now have a P2 stereo output.
  • More Output
    The OPL4 sound is mixed with the internal MSX sound. In others words, you can listen the OPL4 SHOCKWAVE 2 sound through the MSX sound output (mono).
  • More Memory
    The OPL4 SHOCKWAVE 2 has twice the RAM capacity of the original OPL4 (2MB instead of 1MB).

    Well.. let's talk about the new batch:

    1. Tecnobytes will post here on the site, the list of buyers in the order in which they're receiving payments. So everyone can follow the progress. These updates can take up to 48 hours to complete; Check the list in the end of this post!
    2. If Tecnobytes can not reach the minimum quantity of 20 units, they will cancel the project and return the payments;
    3. Tecnobytes will only begin to buy the parts and send the board for manufacturing when that number is reached;
    4. Between the purchase of parts, manufacturing and later assembly, Tecnobytes can have from 2 to 3 months. It all depends on customs and our couriers. They will keep everyone informed.
  • Go and pre-order the new OPL4 cartridge from Tecnobytes!

Good to have more memory! Also the smaller size is welcome I think. The output to the MSX is nice as well, though on the original MoonSound iirc this was omitted to reduce interference, I assume here it’s done in a way that it’s not an issue?

Question: what’s P2 stereo output? TRS 3.5 mm jack socket?

Exactly. TRS connectors are known in Brazil as P1 (2.5mm), P2 (3.5mm) and P10 (6.35mm).

It is s desirable product, combining unrivaled sound possibilities and plenty of memory.
Great!
I' also bought the Powergraph from Tecnobytes, which provides a good quality and service.
The only disadvantages are the shipping cost and duty, which increase the comparatively nice price.
Brazil must be a wonderful country.
Keep the good work going!

If you're worried about privacy issues you can place your order with an alias.

EDIT: Just a small clarification: they've always done this way. I'm not sure why, though.

What I'd like to know is how it sounds. I know the Moonsound, both Dal-So-Ri and FM-Blaster/Woz-Blaster which all sound quite different than the other. I just never heard a Shockwave. Is there someone who can record a comparison with any of the above? It'd be a bit weird to buy buy a fifth one if it sounds worse. But if it sounds better, I just need it. Especially in case it sounds better than both Dal-So-Ri which are the best sounding opl4 devices I have.

The question Grauw asked is really important for the sound quality. The internal Msx sound is really noisy

I have a Shockwave (first model, not this one) and a Wozblaster. Would a comparison between those two be of any interest? If so, I can provide a recording.

If you could record both Shockwave and Wozblaster.
Please record the music linked to here

If your Wozblaster is unmodified, please record the Wozblaster version as loud as first file and keep the record level untouched when recording the Shockwave.

@msd:
One could always cut pin 49 of the cartridge :)

I did it three times since beginning of the year Smile Last time i also soldered some RCA connector because i cut the pin from Modulon slotexpander, and i enjoyed the result. The noise level decreased to be like with YIS503IIIR computer. And yeah, Yamaha being really great with audio output, best of all computers i had. I wonder if it depends more to the MSX-Engine used or to external audio circuitry. But, the best audio from external cartridge and internal PSG comes with this computer. I suppose all the product line YIS503*, CX{5,7}M*, and YIS604* has the same great audio btw.

I would, but as I turned on my Wozblaster it popped a cap and now I'm afraid to turn the computer with it on. It was C22, the capacitor closest to the audio out.

Aaand my Shockwave seems to have died as well. It is detected by all programs that use it, but no sound comes out. I hope it's not a serious problem. Shocked!

i have both wozblaster (clone by reprofactory) and dal-so-ri. If you can record shockwave, i'd like to compare it to dal-so-ri. The finest opl4 cartridge I've heard up to now.

I used a lot both cartridges, especially the Shockwave, so it was very upsetting. I'll have to resort to OpenMSX to keep my projects going, but it just doesn't sound the same. Crying I find the emulated sound strange; a bit too clear, for better and for worse.

Strange, not one time i've got any reaction from Tecnobytes at all.

Send a message through the website 2,5 weeks ago. Result: no reaction.
Send an email to tecnobytes a week ago. Result: no reaction.
Send a message a week ago to Rogerio through the message system of msx.org. Result: no reaction.
Send today again an email to tecnobytes. No reaction.
Send today to the Facebook of Rogerio an message. No reaction at this moment.

It is clear that communication is not a good quality of Tecnobytes. I can't understand this kind of behaviour to your costumer. I hope that the shipment will take place, will be without any problems, because I don't have a good feeling about this. Why you have already a tracking number, and I've got no ANY reaction about the shipment?

I'm very happy with it. It works good, very nice packaging, and the configuration is also very nice and good (small cartridge, 3,5mm jack stereo, 2MB Sample RAM). And of course the CD with it, I was suprised by this! Well done Tecnobytes.

Now I can look-up my old MB Wave disks from 1996, and play my old produced stuff again.
