MV Clone by Wolf

On the MSX Fair in Oss Wolf expanded his Moonsound to 640KB Sample RAM. Curious about what extra capabilities this Sample RAM would give him, he created a little experimental tune, called MV-Clone, which stands for "MediaVentures Clone". The idea was to clone the typical action cues that you can hear on soundtracks like Spy Game, MI2, MetalGear Solid 2 etc. You can listen to the result right here. This MP3 file is 100% pure, without any post-processing, what you hear is what you get! Less than 600kb of custom samples were used, without using ROM tones. A maximum of 22
channels are in use, at peaks only.

To quote a certain person: "640kb is enough for everyone", Wolf continues his campaign to enforce 640kb in every Moonsound. For Moonsound & S-RAM prices you can visit the Sunrise website. Unfortunately Wolf did not send in an MWM/MWK file so that Moonsound owners could try this on their own equipment.

It would be cool if I could listen to this on my own 640K MoonSound! Where are the moonblaster files?

Well I'm glad with the MP3, cuz I still don't have 640k of SampleRAM Smile. And this is a little easier too. Though ofcourse I wouldn't stall a minute to be able to listen to one of Wolf's creations again... ;p.

I'm a bit sceptic.. I wanna try this on my moonsound to verify it's real...

Besides, my msx has an amp+speakers in stead of cheap pc speakers.

Well done Wolf!

I have 640kb already.
I wonder if there'll be many musicdisks: one song = one disk :-)

Everyone who wants to hear wolfs songs on a real msx: try out the Infinite snowdemo, or wait for upcoming releases Smile

CF isn't very cheap... Well, it's not expensive, but the minimum amount you can find nowadays is 32MB, and that costs about 16 euro's at the cheapest places. Per MB quite a decent price, but unfortunately you can not get 4 MB CF carts for 2 euro. So, 16 euros is a bit much for storage material alone. It's more than the price of Bombaman, for example.

Unless you could lay your hands on a dump batch of old 8 MB CF cards, ofcourse. Which also happens to work properly in the Sunrise CF-IDE interface. Would be quite nice... But I looked for that once, wasn't able to find it.

Very nice tune. I too would like the Moonsound files to have my (1MB sampleram) Moonsound generate these sounds.

And SolidEric, why 'just' 256 KB? Most games using Moonsound sample ram are stuck with 128 KB, just because they come with 128 KB to begin with. I wouldn't mind having more moonsound music with large sample kits. People who want to listen to these should consider to add at least 512 KB of sample ram anyway. Let those large MWK files come!

If Wolf wants to enforce the 640 KB sample ram in every Moonsound, he should release the Moonsound files in stead of releasing the MP3.

DD disks are also available, but not in most stores.
I think there are thousands of 8 MB CF's to be found, and cheap too.. You just have to find them.

With CD-R you wouldn't need MP3, MWM, MFM, MWK, MBM, MBK, MUS, SM1, SM2, whatever since you can make the tunes in audio tracks.

I think more people have CF than CD-ROM for MSX now... And CD-ROM's are noisy.

He for the people who have scsi, CF is not an option (or is it?).. A CD-ROM is much cheaper

By Latok

Latok's picture

No, I mean a data CD-R. Wolf's tunes will be like 650kbyte per tune, so I would use a CD-R. I don't understand this CF-option. A CD-R is much cheaper and everyone has the ability to read a CD-R. If it isn't on your MSX, you can on your pc. Just copy the files from your PC to your MSX then.

I think I'd go the dynamic route by having like 2mb of samples, and each wavekit is dynamicly constructed from some of these samples. Then it'll be like a wavekit per stage orso, or in case of an RPG, a wavekit per world (with multiple stages).

So, it's not 640k per tune, but multiple tunes using a single wavekit per 'world' . That lib of samples alone is a reason to skip DD's and go for something like CF or CD-r. Same story with gfx btw..

No, you shouldn't use CD-Audio. I mean, ofcourse that's nice (not considering that those musics can't 'repeat' in a decent manner), but then you are limiting the number of users which can use it to the number of MSX-ers with a CD drive. I for one have one, but it is not connected and I don't really feel like doing so.

The number of MSX users having a CD drive in their PC, and having a means to transfer contents from it to their MSX (CF-)HD through a number of disks, or by connecting their CF or HD to their PC, is a lot bigger.

Basically, you're just looking at nr. of people having a HD connected to their MSX vs. nr. of people having a CD-ROM drive connected to it... And the first, I can assure you, is a much larger group than the latter. However, the game would have to be harddisk-installable, so you can't play it from disk. Ofcourse you could distribute it on a couple of disks, with an installer...

And er, ps, Guyver, about the 8 MB CF's... I could only wish that I knew where to find them Smile. But you're probably right in that they are *out there, somewhere*. I mean, even v9958's can still be found Smile.
