Sample CD for moonsound

At the moment, Wolf is working on a sample cd for moonsound users, to be sold at the MSX fair in Tilburg 2003.

It won't contain burps, cartoon noises, etc. But will contain:

- Numerous pad sounds, perfectly smooth looped (no obvious crossfade leveldrops)
- Numerious coloured noises (a.k.a. 'spectrum noises' in many 90's Roland synths)
- Drums
- Lead sounds
- Ambient sounds ..and much more!

All samples originate from a range of high-end synths, Roland, Novation, Yamaha, and from other sources. Except a few large soundscapes, all samples range in size from medium-small to very small. The pads are usually 32k each, and sampled with intervals of 6 semitones most of the time. Almost all sounds are sampled at 44.1khz, some are stereo, and all are 16bit. The samples are provided in wave format (.wav), so, unless you have a program on your msx that reads/converts wave files, you need to save as a raw file in your preferred sample editor. (Soundforge, Cooledit, Awave etc. etc.)

Since there's no clue yet about how many msx'ers would like such a cd, the only way to make sure you get that cd in Tilburg is reservation. If you want this CD and you are present in Tilburg, send an email to mvs@mvs-music.tmfweb.nl

Unfortunatly there are no plans to send this CD around the globe if you can't be present in Tilburg. The thursday before Tilburg is the day the CD's will be bought/burned, make sure you reserve in time!

It is recommended that you expand your opl4 ram to 640kb quickly to take advance of this serious library. MSX.org offered several inches on the msx.org booth, so that's where you can find the CD.

Estimated price will be 10 euro

I don't want to complain, but IMHO given that a CD-R is 30 cents (budget) to 1 euro (high quality), and the fair costs are low, a price of 10 euros is a bit steep. Remember 10 euros is almost 25 guilders!

Expensive, naah, I think not.. given the fact that parts of my own private library used as well, which represents years of work..
Sampling, looping, editing represents a lot of work.

'Estimated' also means that I was not sure about the price yet.

However, how painful is 22 guilders/10euro for a motivated composer for a set of samples he can actually use?

I would think that's an argument against a high price. Because you already did a lot of work privately there's only a relatively small effort needed to create the CD.
Why would you make people pay for work you didn't expect compensation for, or have already been compensated for in a different way?
^^; I'm probably coming off as a cheapskate here. Then again, I'm not a motivated composer Tongue

Wow! I really like this news Smile
I'm definately going to buy this CD, cause it's always hard to get quality samples. (especially on a moonsound) therefore I think 10 euro is a very good price for such a cd. Good commercial sample cd's are much and much more expensive. Besides this I think a lot of people (starting and advanced composers) can have a lot of fun with these cd's.

Well you need 640K sram? Please let me know if you want to expand your moonsound.
Because we can take care of extra sample ram on Tilburg. Note that this sram's are not cheap also !

Btw. Chaos sent me an email ,because I donot believe your old email-address is valid.
And you still some nice LW musics to be finished

I think 10 euro's is quite a decent price for a CD with a large ammount of useable samples.

My thought exactly. 10 euros is not too much, I think. I do believe though that the samples on the cd should be 'ready to use' on the Moonsound. So no high quality WAV-samples. It should be RAW samples with the correct (on Moonsound usable) bitrate. For 10 euros, this should be an effort Wolf has to put into the cd.

Ready to use..

And what if a sample has a loop somewhere in the middle? A wavefile contains a header with that info, raw files contain nothing except samples.

If it has to be ready to use than I must save them in mbwave format.. which is not an option. But if someone can make a nice 'n small tool for this ..?

besides, Michiel de Vries and Marcel Delorme are working on a new wave-format, which will be supported in OPL4WAVE-editor and Meridian. A tool that convert WAV to that format would come in quite handy Wink

Besides, when a wave is provided in 44k/16bit and someone wants to make it halve its size, then there are 2 options: 44/8 or 22/16. I suggest to let the user decide on this, that's why all samples are provided in hi-quality.

I made a wave to mtn converter back in 1998. It also supports loop information from the wav format.
The program is called WAV2MTN. You can use wild card to convert the wav files. Wav2mtn *.wav file convert all the wav files it finds.

You can find it on my homepage

about a new fileformat..

If this format only contains the wavedata, then why bother with a new format, why not just make a WAV importer?

That saves the trouble to convert files on disk/HD anyway..

using another file-format is important as soon as a program like Meridian needs extra data apart from the WAV itself. Pre-processed files or files with extra info that is needed anyway can increase the speed and useability of a program.

well, imo there are 2 relevant fileformats.

1) the raw sample, including loop adresses, bitrate/playfreq/mono/stereo data

2) an instrument, including the sampledata, with all the envelopes 'n stuff.

I can imagine that 2 has a typical meridian-format. However, the cd aims that situation 1. And a wave importer belongs to situation 1.
