MegaFlashROM SCC+

A new version of the MegaFlashROM is available. MegaFlashROM cartridges are a well-known way to play ROM files on a real MSX computer, as if they were working from the original cartridge. This new version replaces the original SCC and 1024 models, mixing and improving their features using FPGA technology. Thus, the features of this new MegaFlashROM SCC+ are:

  • 1024KB flash memory
  • SCC-I sound
  • Extra YM2149 PSG
  • MultiROM
  • Mappers: ASC8, ASC16, Konami, Konami SCC, linear 48K/64K
  • No switch or button needed
  • 4 subslots simulation (256KB per subslot)

The new subslot simulation feature lets you simulate cartridge combinations like the ones we've seen in some of Konami's ROM games. It is also useful for developers who want to test their own ROM games in a subslot on a real MSX, without having to use a slot expander. The price of this product (box, cartridge and manual) is €60.

Great Smile and..

SCC-I (2312P001) sound chip2312P001, really!? Or an FPGA implementation?

Extra PSGeh? Tongue

*edit* and a question from a pizzafan:
'no switch or button needed', how are we gonna prevent a ROM from booting up, eg. for flashing a new game?

nevermind, pizzafan has read the manual and learned you need to hold ESC.

Subslots simulation? Then I want Etherner + mapped RAM + USB + storage on the same cartridge!

(Hum... this sounds familiar to me...)

All is done on FPGA implementation.

I see. Another Q before I update the newspost:
About the PSG, I assume it's an YM2149 (or compatible), correct?

Here be a question!

Is this also the price for a game ROM with (some of) the above specs?

e.g. SCC-I and extra PSG are ideal for games (no computer balance problems, just scc and psg from one source). But 60 euro for a typical game is a bit pricey iyam, it's what Nemesis III once sold for..

@hap:
Yes, it is a AY-3-8910/YM2149

@wolf:
I don't think so. The final price will depend on the game developer. So perhaps 30-40 euros is a good estimation.

Nice piece of hardware! I'm getting more and more tempted to buy a real MSX, this cart + a CF cart so I wont have to use an emulator anymore Wink

The "Esc" key have RTC reset function with TurboR.
Is it possible choose an other key?

Does someone know what are the minimum hw requirements to *use* this nice cartridge? (i.e. assuming games were already written into the cart and the user just wants to play)

Or equivalent question: have someone used it on bare-bones MSX1 machines?

(and yes, you guessed right: my MSX is nearly as minimum as specifications allow: Philips VG8010, 32K RAM, no floppy etc. )Crying )

The cartridge works in any MSX model. The minimum requirements are the ones needed by the ROM stored in the cartridge.
But if you want to rewrite it using OPFX, you will need DOS/DOS2 and a storage device.
(WYZ made a tool for flashing the cartridge from MSX1 using cassette port)

That´s so cool feature,but ....

It is possible to make a multirom in this device, loading your favourite roms from cassette port??

That will be LA HOSTIA !! BA-teamBA-teamBA-teamBA-team

It is possible. But you will need to write your own software to do it Tongue
(Or ask WYZ to do it ^^!)

Last time I wrote such a tool for flashing from cassette port (it was for SD card cartridge) it was pretty easy - all you need is to break ROM into 16K blocks and attach a small flashing routine to each of them.
You will get a bunch of 16K BIN files which can be then loaded using any cassette BIN loading tool - e.g. MicroWAVer or any other BIN2WAV converter.

Ordered my cartridge.

Question: Can I edit something in BlueMSX myself to implement this setup? New/extra PSG ports etc.
Or is it already supported or is someone willing to crack it up for us lazy bastards?

I really want to play around with it on an emu. Transfering to real HW to test sucks.. (It would imply me to bring my MSX to work :faceSmile

What kind of tool do I need to open and edit the multirom.opf file in real MSX DOS2? I mean as I have a full directory of useful stuff for Megaflashrom in CF and it is a too much work to always edit the file separetely in PC.

Van meits

you can with a text editor (dutchies prever TED), or you can use the prompt in dos:
A:\>copy con multirom.opf
ROM1.ROM
ROM2.ROM
ROM3.ROM
[END]
ctrl+Z and it's saved...

On the DOSprompt that is...

If you want to save your file press F4, chose [S]top, [J]a for Zeker weten? and [J]a for Huidige tekst bewaren op disk?
