I use the Toshiba recorder that came with my HX-10.

Blank tapes it's a case of if you can get them get them.

If you want to try a home build replacement then you can try my project which can now play .CAS files at 3600 baud which is much faster than the original or alternatively could try my updated version of cas2wav that outputs at 1200/2400/3600 baud and record the .wav files on to tape from your PC.

You can use any. Even a laptop.

But I doubt many people are still using them these days.

The tapes I've seen most are TDK D60 ones... Short to be light for the recorder... No clue why the ferrow ones were popular in computerland while the chrome ones ruled the audio world...

Back in the day you could buy special computer targeted tapes, of 5, 10 or 15 minutes. That's a lot more convenient than 60 or 90 minutes...

Note that TDK D60 is the low segment of tapes, just ferro (type I), just like the computer tapes.

I used these back in the day http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TDK-PC-10-PERSONAL-COMPUTER-CASSETTE-TAPE-SEALED-/121734524862?hash=item1c57f16fbe:g:yoAAAOSwT6pV0xm2

If I recall they are the same as the old TDK AD tape, they where very reliable.

I also believe getting blank tapes may be quite difficult these days, not to mention the tape recorder. I understand why you want to achieve your goal, though. But I believe you might get bored / annoyed with the tapes quite soon, with head alignment adjustement issues, worn mechanical parts etc Smile

So, especially in case you can not find a tape recorder (or empty/spare tapes), you might want to consider something else. Really any device that can output something lossless (or lossy with enough bitrate) will suffice. I burned CDs back in the day, and used a CD walkman, when I still wanted to load games trought the tape interface (and, as posted elsewhere, I went into the trouble of putting different programs on left and right channels!). Nowadays I'd probably use some tablet for the same job.

Btw., was / is there an adroid app that will decode .cas files on-the-fly, so that wasting storage space by storing WAVs / MP3s is not needed?

Tap dancer outputs .cas files through the 3.5mm jack to the computer. There is also MSX2WAV which converts ROMs as well.

By the way, I personally like the Philips NMS 1150/D6450 and the Sony SDC-600S and SDC-500.

But as no one uses these anymore, I guess everyone considers them worthless and they're simply trashed.
