I have asked on a past post but no reply's have been forth coming. so i will as it here.. what rom's can i use in the sony HB F1 to replace the original. i want to remove the japan software that i wont use. also was there ever a pdf of the 512kb ram upgrade? as it was fo a xd? version and mine is a F1 standard.

About the firmware I think you can use the same method as for the FS-A1 (by also removing the 16K of firmware 1).

just looked and only have M27c512 and M27c256 Eprom not EEprom.. are they ok?
if so i have about 10 of them

An EEprom is more easy to use but you can use the M27c512.
The M27c256 is too little.

If you want to permanently remove the firmware & not ever change BIOS/BASIC/SUBROM then yes a 27C512 can hold those ROMs. But re-'burning' it would require an UV lamp with EPROM-suitable wavelength to erase the chip. If you want to permanently remove the firmware & maybe change BIOS/BASIC/SUBROM later on, then 64K*8 bit EEPROM is more convenient. A pair of 27C256 (or 27C256 + 27C128) could perhaps be used but I wouldn't bother.

If you want to make the firmware switchable, then easiest is to use a 2x bigger chip than original ROM (1 Mbit iirc?). That is: a 2 Mbit (256K*8 bit) flash EPROM. Or 27C020 UV EPROM if you're not interested in tweaking the ROMs. One half you fill with original 1 Mbit, other half with new version. Switch determines logic level on highest address pin = decides which half is used.

The firmware has no use. It would be a shame to modify the machine for it.

The method I give allows to easly restore the original Rom if needed.

I added a version with the X-Basic that should take the place of firmware 1. It will not be useful if you use Nextor.
