Retro Canada, known from his in-development port of Super Mario Bros 3 for MSX, has revealed another interesting and ambitious project: a clone of the swiss army knive of file managers,Norton Commander for MSX. Even though development has just begun, the features are already quite impressive:

  • Developed 100% in assembly
  • Rich colorful text mode interface
  • Object-oriented interface with pull-down menus, windows, dialogs, buttons and text-boxes
  • Mouse support for point and click
  • IBM PC-like cursor emulation
  • Mapper usage. There is no limit on the number of files per folder
  • Double buffered screen, no artifacts when refreshing
  • Integrated shell with fork/join process up to 124 characters of command line

MSX Commander requires MSX-DOS2 and at least 256K RAM. We'll be following this project closely and will keep you informed on any future updates.

Wow, nice one! Looks very interesting and I'll give it a go soon. I've missed a dual pane file manager for MSX, but on other systems I use mc a lot!

Great ! I like it !

BTW, how many NC clones are there for MSX ? Till now, in 1980s I personally have seen 2 - one was a MSX-DOS1 shell extension (I don't remember it's name), and another - a legendary ND System that replaced MSX-DOS, ROM executor and network sender for Yamaha classroom networks for almost all types of files known then.

There was also XCC (Xelasoft Control Center)! Unfortunately I can't find it anymore..... Sad
I think the source code is available here:

Hi,

I decided to make the MSX Commander, a.k.a MC because all the other shell commanders have limitations, like 255 files per folder, lack of recursive delete, no progress bars, very old interface etc.

And the description here is wrong: you need 256K for MSX Commander.

recursive delete means deleting including subdirs ,right??
does it also COPY including subdirs??

Great job indeed! I can see this becoming my default file manager with ease Smile

@retrocanada76: I updated the newspost to reflect the 256K.

What are the drawbacks of M, which make you create MC?

MM:
- Old interface
- No mouse support
- No dual pane, copying a file means rather typing the new destination or treeing the destination drive and choosing the folder
- Once copy/delete starts no way to stop it
- It deletes folders with RO files without confirming
- No fast scrolling when browsing files

M:
- slow interlaced mode/no fast scrolling
- No mouse support
- No good support for executing files or running commands (it tricks using a .bat file)
- It goes crazy with more than 255 files in same folder
- at least in my version (dated from 2010) there i couldn't change drives, copy or delete files, the only options were the ones you config using F-Keys
- no way to switch partition in a good way

I saw recently on youtube a version 1.5, with file management, but still is interlaced, no support for commands.

Note from moderator: please create a forum topic in the Trading&Collection forum for this in stead of placing it in totally unrelated newsposts. I've deleted the other misplaced annoucements. Thank you.
