+1 for a proper MSX1 RTS game, wishlist:
- scrollable map
- support maximum number of units of 100 or so
- mulitple unit types
- with mouse control
- minimap
- different terrain types
Some games that I would like on MSX:
* A turn-based war game like Nectaris.
* Super Mario with smooth scrolling (SMB3 for example)
* Tower of Babel
* Raid on Bungeling Bay with smooth scrolling
* Balloon Fight
* Guerilla war
* Excite bike
* Donkey Kong like on Adam
* Star Master like game (2600)
* Kaboom (2600)
* Karoshi's unfinished games completed
* MKid completed
* Grauw's RPG completed
* X-Tazy completed
yeah X-tazy. Awesome game. Its open source so perhaps someone could pick it up and complete it. My V9990 skills are not so well but in the future I may give it a try.
Smooth scrolling platformers are my favorite. I hope one day someone will make a SMB port to MSX.
a *good* SMB
I mean, we already have a crap reskin of SMB3 and a Korean bootleg remake of SMB1.

Thanks for the mention! Being in-between MKid and X-Tazy is both an honour and a warning… But contrary to the other two, it’s still in development for sure. Sorry it’s going so slow!
Better slow and steady, than overhyped, quick and burnt out.
It is an excellent motto.

Those games... the disappointment. All my friends at school had a nes and one day smb came out on the msx. I was so happy when I finally got the game but ohw boy the dissapointment. I felt like the avgn that day. So sad and angry.
MSX1 did not allow far better, so it is not as with crappy zx speccy convertions.
Too much limitations in SMB, lack of hw scrolling, limited n. of sprites / scanline. No multicolor.
Try to think the same game with smooth scrolling and a decent n. of sprites / scanline or multicolor support and you will judge those crappy games as good.
The problem is the TMS.

I have been thinking about this for a while and is extremely difficult to do an RTS in MSX1.
Sprites are pretty much out of the question other than for the bullets, and tile based units are severely limited by the 256 pattern table... therefore, usage of ROM/RAM to store unit animation frames plus lots of data transfers seem unavoidable, which mean the action would be rather slow.
In MSX2 it would be much easier, but also quite slow due to the amount of block transfers per frame that you can do.
