. mean, we already have a crap reskin of SMB3 and a Korean bootleg remake of SMB1.

Those games... the disappointment. All my friends at school had a nes and one day smb came out on the msx. I was so happy when I finally got the game but ohw boy the dissapointment. I felt like the avgn that day. So sad and angry.

This must be one of the most recognizable stories I've ever read here. Smile

More action games in Screen 4. I don't know why action games like Valis 2, Saziri, etc were done in SC5 + soft sprites, this means a veeeery poor frame rate and a broken gameplay. Actions games should be done in SC4 with hard sprites, so you can have NES style games. Psycho World is a very good example to follow.

just try to imagine the valis II sprites size combined with colour details with hw sprites. Let's the flicker party start!
MSX 2 should have got a sc4 like mode but without colour clash. but infortunately there was no bandwidth available to do this.
Plus the slowness of Valis in sc5 is seen (as usual) as a VDP bottleneck, but it is not. I've done some checks and what is appear is that the VDP is actually WAITING for commands. the problem is how the game is coded and the ambition of a two layer scroll done in SW. Actually the bottleneck is the CPU . If you switch to 7Mhz or greater the speed improves.

If the bottleneck was the vdp, no much gain would be achieved by a faster CPU.

NES also had a heavy flicker but this didn't prevent to have great action games. Aleste has a heavy flicker in the most of the game but it's a master piece. I clearly prefer something with flicker and good frame rate (Aleste) that something that simply is not playable because they wanted to avoid flicker (Valis 2). In Valis 2 the only way to play is to have the homming weapon and let the weapon do the job.

FRS made an enhanced version that utilizes the R800 Smile That helps.

Can't get the RTS game idea out of my head, an RTS game for MSX would be pretty cool! What RTS games are your favorite and would like to see a game like that on MSX?
- There's the standard modern "Dune II" style that prevails nowadays,
- but there's also Z (which I thought was awesome, and might be more feasible in MSX since there's less units in the map on that type of game)
- And of course, there's one offs like Nether Earth that I mentioned above, which is definitively feasible as the original is a Spectrum game :)

And I'm sure there's other types of RTS games. But I've dreamed many times of something halfway between Z and Nether Earth. Z-style gameplay, but with the compositional unit creation of Nether Earth :)

In the 90s Paragon worked on a project called Dome, a Dune 2 clone, it was never completed but got pretty far and looked cool. Unfortunately I can’t find a video but there are some screenshots on generation-msx.

I myself also worked on an RTS project around that time called Strategic Army, some screenshots here. I was very young and it was my first game project that never got completed either, it stranded after making a tile editor rather than much of the actual game, but I do still like the concept a lot.
