Hello Everyone! My name is Svante, and I'm from Sweden.
I just recently stumbled upon a very cheap Toshiba MSX HX-10 Smile
And since I have been interested in entering the MSX world for many years, and sampled some games through emulation, I felt it was about time I started to collect for the system. So far I only have Goonies and Arctic Adventure for the system.
But I have been looking into other classic games from Konami, but the prices on Ebay have put a damper on my interest in collecting for the machine.
Some goes for hundreds of dollars... Is it really THAT expensive to collect carts for the system? Sad

I'm also looking for Bosconian, but haven't found it anywhere. Is that also expensive? Or only rare?

Hopefully I can find some gems on this forum, instead of burning my wallet on ebay Wink

A lot of people put items on eBay for ridiculous prices, hoping someone will pay up and they can cash in. Because these items are not getting sold they stay on eBay for a long time and may give the impression that those games are actually worth that much. You have to have some patience and wait for items with a better price to come up, usually auctions rather than fixed price sales.

Most Konami MSX1 games for example should not have to cost you more than €20, or max. €40 for the ones with SCC. Salamander or Penguin Adventure for €30 sounds like a fair deal. Some games you will not find for cheap though, e.g. Mr Ghost or Aleste 2 or Metal Gear 2 will cost you an arm and a leg.

Some rough Konami pricing guide:

Konami €10-€20 range: Hyper Sports, Antarctic Adventure, Athletic Land, King’s Valley, Monkey Academy, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Circus Charlie, Road Fighter, etc.
Konami €20-€40 range: Nemesis, F1 Spirit, Usas, King’s Valley II, Nemesis II, Salamander, Penguin Adventure
Konami €40-€60 range: Quarth, Contra
Konami €60-€100 range: Metal Gear, Nemesis III
Konami €100-€200 range: Snatcher, SD Snatcher
Konami €200-€300 range: Space Manbow, Metal Gear 2

(Although MG and MG2 are going for quite ridiculous prices since Phantom Pain was released.)

These is what I see as fair prices for these games based on eBay, Marktplaats and the forum here Smile. Subject to disagreement or mistakes, but just to give you an indication of the pricing tiers.

Thank you, for updating me on the prices Smile

I'm gonna have some patience and see what I can find at the auctions.

Do you know what prices Namco games usually goes for, like Galaga and Bosconian?
Probably gonna focus on collecting the Konami games first though Smile

I expect around the €20 price range. In eBay’s advanced search you can see which auctions were sold recently for a specific item, and it seems Galaga was sold for €16, €18, €11 and €28 recently. Bosconian is not listed so it’s not as commonly sold seems, but still I would expect a price of around €20.

Generally speaking, cassette games are dirt cheap (<€5), for cartridge and disk games prices for MSX1 games are generally lower (€10-€30) than those of MSX2 games (€20-€50). Additional factors which influence the price are popularity, rarity and also the condition of the cartridge and whether it’s boxed.

And then there are a few outliers like the aforementioned Mr. Ghost and Aleste 2 which are expensive “just because”. That’s the only explanation I can give really Smile. They are good games of course, but they don’t seem to be particularly rare, or better than many games that go for normal prices, so exactly why they fetch such exorbitant prices I don’t know.

Okey, then I know what prices to offer for these games, if I can find them for sale on here Smile

Cool the HX-10 was my first MSX when i was young!! And yes a lot of people like to have these originals. Especially the konami games.

There is also a dutch secondhand site where people sell their msx games and computers. Most of the time with fair prices.

Hejsan! Jag mår bra! Och du? Big smile

Thanks for the link. Will keep an eye on that one Smile

I'm thinking of upgrading to an MSX2 machine in the future, but it's mostly these earlier MSX1 games I'm most interested in, at the moment.

Hi Svante and cheers here from your neighbour Finland!

If you're okay with just loose cartridges, you won't have to pay that much. Usually around 10-30€ for the Konami ones and same for the Namcot ones too. But if you'd like to collect the complete copies with manuals, the prices will at least double. So, you'll have to take that into account and plan how you would like to collect. Some games are really expensive even if they start with 0€ bid, because lots of people want them and are are willing to pay big cash to get them. You never know when one particular game will be up again for bidding, so you must be quick sometimes. Fortunately most of the Konami games are quite common and easy to find even as complete copies. Only few very rare games exists like Cabbage Patch Kids, Magical Tree, Comic Bakery, Frogger and Pippols.

Cheers neighbour! Big smile

If I can find a boxed copy for a good price, I'll go for the complete one, but otherwise I'll just grab the loose carts instead Smile
