Sudden Burst is an MSX2 project featuring smooth horizontal scrolling that revives the run and gun genre, which is relatively underrepresented in the MSX game library. Watching the YouTube demonstration video, your faithful reporter immediately got flashbacks of games such as Konami classics Contra and Green Beret, but also of the movie adaptation Predator, only with deliciously smoothly scrolling screens, ofcourse.

In this game we'll assume the role of an elite guerrilla soldier, who travels to the Sambisa Forest in Nigeria to rescue a group of girls kidnapped by a paramilitary group of terrorists. As the game progresses, complications will enter the story, as the terrorist group will retaliate for the actions of the protagonist.
The game consists of 5 long phases, each one having an end boss. In general, the action unfurls while scrolling from the left to the right, but there will be times when there is also an exploration element, and certain items will have to be gathered to complete the mission.
Between phases, we're treated to visual scenes with elaborate texts - somewhat like a visual novel - in which the plot of the game will be unraveled. The game will have both a "good ending" and a "bad ending".

Next to PSG sound effects, Sudden Burst will feature FM-PAC music that is being developed by a professional musician. Its creators estimate that the game will be available for sale by the end of 2018 in 4MB MegaROM format.
Note that the music accompanying the demonstration video is unrelated to the actual soundtrack for this project.

Could have sworn I saw an earlier WIP video of this a few weeks/months ago but cant seem to find it. Looks more functional now than what I remember, so it is nice to see the progress. Big smile

"FM-PAC music that is being developed by a professional musician" Interesting. Professional in what way? some famous artist/producer?

Looks awesome! Looking forward!

If the makers read this: I think the character sprite frame should probably not put his right leg so far forward, looks a bit unnatural for his torso orientation. And there are probably technical limitations, but any chance of moving at double the speed?

This newspost indeed looks a bit incomplete without further info on the developers. Smile
I'm inquiring about that as we speak, will report back here when I find out more.

I second that. The contra guy moves a tad better. On the other levels it's this over contra imho (at least for the 2D scenes): good graphics and scrolling. Curious what the final music will sound like. The contra music ain't bad at all.

I do not want to be a hero, I want to become rich. Does it work as well?

When you find a way to get rich out of doing anything MSX related please let us know :-)

You can if you get exceptionally proficient at riding a motorbike. ;)

The tiles are stored on VRAM (because I have to uncompress them). Some sprite bitmaps on ROM (player death, game over title, etc..).
