@Overflow I supossed that that level is not possible in a game, it uses a lot of hardware tricks to achieve this. Obviously I've no intention to start a flame war between CPC plus vs MSX2+ since I love both of them and apreciate them. Games like Aleste 2, made with a simple MSX2, seems not possible in CPC plus. I think that both systems has their strengths and weaknesses.

BTW, I know that port of G&G, I'm user of cpcwiki forum too and I've seen it. Really a very impressive work done on a stock CPC plus with no expansions.

awesome! And pratically IMPOSSIBLE on a msx without the v9990

On plain msx2 it would be doable. Even in screen 8 it would work just fine at least the levels with horizontal scrolling.
As in later levels you need multidirectional scrolling, maybe it would be safer to choose screen 5, but overall GnG can be ported to plain msx2.

You have uridium 2 and manbow 2 as reference

G&G can be done on MSX2+ SC5 or MSX2 SC4 without many tricks.

Not to diss on anyone's work but, I've seen a lot of G&G demos and POCs over the years... Never played it but, why do people think it is such a great game? It looks kinda so-so to me... If I would have to pick an impressive platformer, I would pick Turrican II or something.

Take in consideration that the arcade was launched in 1985, it's a very good game for that year. The atmosfear is very nice too, I think that most people likes ghost ambientations :-).

For 8 bit machines, like MSX or CPC, is a very good game to make a port.

Disclaimer: I'm not a player. I do like (good) ports on multiples platforms for easy (technical) comparison. I do like ports of famous games to create some buzz (... on 8bit machines! lol). Just added those 2 sentences and concluded: SOTB was "the" one-screen to display.

MSX2(+) has so many strengths! I believe you guys should considerer porting "Pinball Dreams". We all know that MSX2+ could do much better than the upcoming port on Amstrad (check here if needed). Again: just missing some motivated guys to turn that "it could" into "yes we did it!"

Back to the original topic: SOTB, parallax and mostly multi-layers. We don't have hardware layers. There are many ways to have fake ones - most of them would hardly fit a game. Let's try: screen at right, do you see many sprites? well, there aren't any sprites - only changing start adress for screen (i.e. "scrolling") within 16kb vram at left.

Be aware of this: I did use demo tricks - don't rely on SOTB (gfx+sound) to think GX4000 is wonderful.

Problems are sprites,
some are big and there are a discrete number on scanline

Bosses appear when scrolling halts, so you can use software sprites or compose more hardware sprites.
About the gameplay, accepting some flickering, you can show almost everything from the first level without relevant compromises. You have two zombies, Arthur and two bullets per line using 3 colors sprites.
I do not remember if later levels have more problems on this side

The bouncing eyeballs from shortly after you default the first boss (disclaimer: I've played the Atari Lynx version of Shadow of the Beast a lot, but never spent substantial time on any other) would be problematic as sprites because there are several of them in a row. They're evenly spaced and don't move left or right though, so presumably could be built into the background as a tile animation?

Now this is indeed a game that would be great to see on the MSX2(+) indeed...
