You could check on VGMrips.net and the YouTube videos of John Hassink. That gives you some basics. Make sure to include Microcabin
I actually prepared a post earlier, wrote this on music (what I consider essential stuff):
PSG: Ushas, Penguin Adventure
SCC (KKC): Gradius 2 (Nemesis 2), Gofer's Ambition Ep. II (Nemesis 3), Salamander, (SD) Snatcher, Solid Snake
OPLL: Fire Hawk, Starship Rendezvous (Sakimoto/Iwata), Xak (I, II, Gazzel) (Micro Cabin)
Sure I'm forgetting a thing or two (Falcom stuff, Psycho World, ... )
You could mention something about the composers, how SCC came to be (Snatcher SCC Memorial Joint Disk liner notes). Yuji Takenouchi is a prolific techno/deep house/ambient producer nowadays, and of course Hitoshi Sakimto is quite famous (e.g FF Tactics, FF XII, but also e.g. did Gradius V), and was very prolific on PC-x8 & Genesis (MD) (w/ Masaharu Iwata). I believe SSRDVZ is his only work on the MSX?
And of course there's Mieko Ishikawa, Yuzo Koshiro, Michiru Yamane, Kinuyo Yamashita, ...
PSG: Ys series And quite some cool European stuff. Like Venom Strikes Back. But it also exists for other ports.
Yes, these are good examples.
I will surely mention the story of the SCC but we could not get too deep. As I made a test drive with Michi last week, we talked for hours without getting a quarter of the things done we wanted to.
I would like to hear some SFG titles. is there a compilation or archive or something?
I've tried to find SFG files for years (to test the emulation), but no one seems to have any files for the Yamaha software.
The only thing you can do is vgmplay, I guess.
But if someone finds data files for the SFG, please speak up
I’ve got a few play cards but I don’t have the reader unfortunately (if anyone has one for sale…). They probably won’t sound great anyway, there’s music from other systems that you can play with VGMPlay which will be much more awesome.
Bas has demonstrated one of this card readers on one of the last Nijm fairs.
I just wonder, there has been so much musicians who used the yamaha for composing first and not a single file is to be found in the net.
This will be a part of my roadmap.
Quite complete!
Something that I'd like (but perhaps not that interesting for everybody else) is how games were made at the time. I mean, directly on the MSX? Using cross compilers? Making the graphics with a 16-bit system? How the main developers did it at the time?
It's a pity I can't understand German, BTW :/
I'm sure Michi has a nice story to tell about japanese game development back in the days. All I know is that konami used HP6400 Hardware. There was also an post here in the forum if you wanna dive into.
The MSX lootbox contains a "The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers" a book by SMG Szcepaniak. So everybody who get the box in his hands, please take a blook at this fantastic book.

On that note, I believe it would be impressive to showcase a couple Mega Drive tracks played on VGMPlay with SFG. Sonic 2, Thunder Force IV, maybe? Wanderers from Ys also has a great soundtrack on Mega Drive.
