Format your CF inserted in the C2 with _DISK in FAT16 and make a partition, then copy the files on the CF by using your USB PC CF card reader. (at least NEXTOR.SYS and COMMAND2.COM)

Typo: _FDISK

On Mac, you will have problems with hidden files and folders that macOS writes with long names and without giving a choice. Try to find software (like clean eject, Drive clesn, etc) that removes them and ejects the card at the same time. It's a bit painful but this way you can handle your files and folders on MSX without any problem.

I never remove those on my Mac and it works fine for me, so I don’t think it’s mandatory.

When files with long name is present, no problem if you use your MSX to read or save files only but if you delete, move or save a file/folder with long name, the FAT will corrupted. Also, it's a little annoying to see them on the disk and take up space.

Thanks for the input, but like I said earlier, that card reader doesn't see the MSX-formatted SDcard-in-the-adapter. I actually have another CF adapter (same make) and this one (plus MSX SD) is visible in Windows via the card reader - but not on the MSX (sigh). Anyway, I used them both, first to format the card on MSX with one, then use the other to copy files via card reader on Win10, then switch to the other one again for MSX - but in the end I always end up in Nextor Basic.

I also do not have access to a Mac/Linux/.... machine - only Windows 10.

This has turned out to be quite a headache, because there are a few variables that could be the culprit - CF adapter, the USB card reader, perhaps me doing something wrong (even though I followed instructions to a T). Not sure what to do next...

I also still have the Mapper Megaram multicart, which works fine in that MSX (can boot to Nextor, use SR on it, etc). Is there any way perhaps I could use this cart to copy Nextor files to Carnivore?

Typing "files" (it's not case sensitive, is it?) gives "bad drive name".

I *think* this means that Nextor didn't find *any* partitions on the CF card. So here the _FDISK would be necessary to create them.
I'm using a plain CF card myself with a card reader on Linux and all works well.

Note that you can still move files on the CF card using the floppy drive of your MSX, if it (still) has (a working) one. It's just clumsy, but that's how we did it in the 90's.

I 've just checked and yes, there are no partitions. But how is this possible? I've just made some....
-start the computer
-boots to Carnivore Menu
-press ESC,
-computer boots to Nextor Basic
-CALL FDISK
-press A x4 - this makes 4 partitions on my 16(14.7)GB SD
-press W, "yes" = "creating partittion 1 of 4..." - "Done!"
-press S, I can see 4x FAT16 partitions (3x4096, 1x2792)
-either switch the computer off or ESC to Basic then switch off
-switch on, Carnivore Menu, Esc, Nextor Basic, CALL FDISK
-"No partitions found or defined"
-oO

Perhaps you should try a real CF card afterall...

Also, when you got this part working, you can perhaps insert both the C2 and the old cartridge to copy files over... it will take a long time though, if it works.

I had the same problem, using a SD to CF adapter (it was on compatibility list) and solved with a real CF card

Sigh...I was hoping I could avoid throwing more money at this, since buying the C2 itself was already an extravagance (heck, the MSX2 was, to start with). I even refused an offer of an included, working CF from the seller, to bring the cost down...kicking myself about that now .

Alright, I'll try to source some reasonably priced card from the list and report back.

The C2 is an impressive device, but I don't quite understand why it uses CF cards.

I think because it’s based on the Sunrise CF-IDE?
