A digital edition of previous MSX games from Russia are now available. With exclusive game titles dusted off and refactored to 2022 standards, this collection features four adventure-puzzle games. It is now commercially available for download with a possible future physical format release.

Russian author of games for MSX personal computers Andrey Rodionov, is one of those lucky ones that re-discovered love for the 8-bit retro machines. As many of us do these days. Childhood memories suppressed deep into the our own someday find an exit and shine like never before. Making Arnold's famous punchline "I'll be back", un understatement. Andrey picked up the gloves and started typing on the old MSX again, refactoring retro software.

In 1988, not that long ago, only 30 years, under the moniker "Crazy Soft", Andrey Rodionov programmed a few games that were ready to be commercially available. That, however, never happened. Now is as good time as any to make that dream come true. As original game sources were dusted off and made ready for 2022, the author placed them on a collection disk ready for the rest of the world to enjoy it. On the disk there are four games.

These four games are on the game-pack disk:

  • Back to the Earth - a space adventure
  • Major Pistoletov - a platform action adventure
  • Pistoletov at factory - the sequel of Major Pistoletov - platform action adventure
  • Danceroid - a labyrinth and puzzle action

All these four games had originally been developed over 30 years ago for the MSX1 computer system. These games are unique in the fact that level creation is random; you'll never play the same levels twice. This guarantees a fresh experience on every game play.

The sale consists of a digital version (a .DSK file) with the 4 games and some bonuses, English and Portuguese detailed instructions complete with a box cover image. Standard price for a digital copy is USD 14.99 by PayPal - contact via Andrey Rodionov's email for purchase. In the near future there might even be a physical edition available. We keep you posted.

So, why were these games not published before? What's the story?

Also, looks like the original Russian games have already somehow emerged before: https://www.generation-msx.nl/company/ar-crazysoft/926/softw... but indeed no commercial release.

This looks very nice. Is promotional video including original game music or just a random cover song? If later, what are original sounds?

The music in that trailer video is not from the games. It was originally composed by Andrew Rodionoff (he's a renown professional soviet and russian composer, btw) in 1982.
The composition is called 'To fly'.

Manuel,

Thanks for you interest. As you probably know, MSX popularity was getting down over the years but recently some kinda retro renaissance happened and lots of very cool retro projects were dusted off, renewed and published even some new stuff was created not only for MSX but for other retro platforms.

Regarding those games in particular, author recently found the source code of the games and decided to renew them (removed bugs, made games a bit more gamer-friendly as per modern gaming standards, extra stuff was added, etc). In the same time translation was proposed and decision taken to support author, who has some personal issues. We, as a small team, did everything for free and all profit will go directly to author. So I wouldn't say this is pure commercial project, I would say this is kinda hobby project which can support author in the same time.

Also author is professional composer and musician, who did very cool stuff in the past, however you cannot be permanently creative during all your life. One more objective of that project was to attract some more attention to author's content, which was obscured over the years.

I guess I explained clear:)

Unfortunately (and perhaps unsurprisingly in light of recent sad news) the website is down, but the Internet Archive has preserved this music fortunately https://web.archive.org/web/20180310111706/http://rodionov.i...
