Summertime is here, it is time to create! The Snowfall and Under Water Challenges turned out to be a huge success. They resulted in a grand total of 36 new MSX demos and games. With many cool prizes and independant jurors such as Wammes Witkop and Frank Druijff, the MSX community really has found a platform to show its creativity. The results of the Under Water Challenge will be revealed next week, in the mean time we start our new development challenge: the time has come to....Bounce!!

As with previous challenges, anything goes. No matter if it's a game or a demo, highprofile ASM or a cool BASIC oneliner, as long as it applies to the 'bounce'-theme.

As for system requirements: you are free to use anything ranging from an unexpanded MSX1 with 16kB RAM to a fully-equipped MSX turboR with 512kB RAM, GFX9000, 512kB Moonsound and IDE/CompactFlash. Of course you are also allowed to support the MSX-MUSIC, MSX-AUDIO or SCC sound chips.

And yes, of course, like previous challenges, there will be prizes to win. Try to get that olympic feel, though. It's not winning that counts, participation is da bouncing bomb!

So, if you want to join the challenge, be sure to send your submission(s) in before October 11th, 23:59 CET to bounce@msx.org. Needless to say, you are allowed to send in more than one submission.

Like the previous challenges, the entries will be judged by an independant juror. We already have someone special in mind. Just keep track on our website as we will announce his (or her) name soon.

Wammes Witkop - Frank H. Druijff - ...

Well, if it continues to follow a certain pattern the next one will be Jose Herps/Alfred Debels, Steven Vanhetgoor or Luc Sala (sp?)

Luc Sala (sp?), I think that I also heard this name.
Does anyone know if Yukio Futatsugi
made or worked at any game for MSX?
Sometimes, I heard a name without remember very well where I got the name!
My name was similar to the name that a great singer had. :)

..I don't mind stealing bread from the mouths of decadence.
But I can't feed all the powerless, while my cup's already overfilled.
I'm growing hungry.....

Thing Bounces Back... Yeah, I bought that game on tape when I was a kid. Never understood what the game was about, but I do still remember thinking there was some Dutch in the game (the word 'door'). I completely didn't understand English yet so I thought it was the Dutch word meaning 'through' Tongue

This 'Bounce Challenge' isn't by any chance a feeble attempt to get people to program a pinball game, is it? Tongue

It's a bit of an abstract theme this time .. the previous 2 themes were concrete visual themes while this one is an abstract technical one. For a next compo I'd prefer a visual theme again Smile

I thought the 'under water' theme was quite abstract as well, especially since music-only entries were allowed as well. Wink

uh .. underwater and showfall were definitly not abstract Smile

If you come up with a theme called 'Alaska' .. then I think most ppl have plenty of ideas (gfx/music) already. If the theme is 'factory', then there's plenty of stuff coders, and artists can come-up with. And what about themes like 'Tropical rainforest', 'Mars', 'Water', 'history', 'future', 'caves', 'Antarctica' etc.

But 'bounce' ... bounce what ? It's just a technical aspect, usually shown using vdp(19) or vdp(24) .. Ofcourse this means that ppl have to be more creative. The question is if they will be more creative. If not, then we end-up with 10 bouncing logos, 5 bouncing scrolltexts, 3 bouncing sprite-systems (think 'Fuzzy Logic') and a few tunes using the famous poing-sample Smile So, just for these reasons I think that a concrete theme will result in a wider spectrum of contributions. But who knows.. perhaps I'm wrong.

ps. the above themes in the first alinea are most of them also used in Imax movies .. always a great source of inspiration Smile

Maybe it's the idea for people to get more creative with this challenge. It's just too easy for people to use VDP registers R#18 or R#23 to put a parabole or a sine curve on. If there will be many demo's with the same concept (bouncing screens, bouncing logo's, bouncing scrolls, bouncing sprite systems poing sounds, etc.) the more chance will a really original implementation of the bounce concept have.

Hiya all,

Well...

I was not asked to be part of the jury for this one - yet. Last time did get me a nice dinner at my favourite Indian restaurant as well as some very nice flowers I never said "Thank You" for. I might be persuaded to do the dutay again...

Cheers, Wammes

Hey Wammes, it's good to see you hanging around here! Smile As you probably noticed we have chartered Frank H. Druijff to be the juror on the Under Water Challenge and André Ligthart and Martijn Maatjens (ANMA) are judging the entries to the Bounce Challenge. It's good to hear you enjoyed judging the snowfall entries, you'll probably hear from us again when we're in need of a juror for a future challenge. And when we'd like to eat some Indian food of course Wink
