No sound on Sony HB-F1XD

I'm new to the MSX world, so please forgive my ignorance.

I've just bought my first MSX, a Sony HB-F1XD, and I'm having a few problems... specifically, I'm not getting any sound from the machine. I've tried a couple of (original) cartridge games (Hydlide 3 and Ashguine II) and while they play well, there's no sound or music at all.

Do I NEED an audio cart like the MSX-Audio, FM-PAC, et cetera, to hear sound, or is my MSX buggered?

Hi there, and welcome!

Your MSX has the PSG chip built in for sound. Both Hydlide and Ashguine support the PSG, so you should be hearing audio. I have never heard an MSX break down in the sound part only, so I'm guessing the cable you use might be broken, or maybe it doesn't send the audio to your monitor/TV. How did you connect your MSX, with an 8 pin RGB connector?

Nope, the cable was the second thing I checked (after first making sure the TV volume was turned up!). I'm using the RCA jacks on the back of the MSX to connect to my TV.

It may be possible that the audio jack in the MSX is damaged, I'll have to open it up to check.

Sony has some connector issues. At least the sony HB-F700 has joystick connector issues... Maybe the F1-XD is soldered by the same guy

I have a HB-F1XD and the soldering is shocking. I has similar issues and they were corrected by resoldering some of the connections.

It is a great little machine though, very upgradable

BTW: both my Video & sound phono connectors were loose. Resolder them and you'll probably good to go

I'll be sure to check the soldered connections when I get home... my soldering skills aren't great but practice makes perfect!

the sound input is pin 14 , output pin 21

first change the capacitor C14 10µF

As a technician you should measure first every main voltage on mainboard just to be sure everything is right.

Then you should use headphones and connect them directly to the sound chip output to see if its working, from there you can follow the traces up to the output to locate the fault.

Reading schematics is easy, every symbol is a component and its numbers are marked on mainboard, and every line is a connection between pins . The small scratch in top of componentes signals pin 1 at left and top pin at right.

the HIC-1 is not a component but a is little board RGB/NTSC ENCODER

and some detail of internal part are on sheet 11
