MSX Quick Disk Drive QDM-01 on eBay

It's a Quick Disk drive... it uses special stringy floppies. LIke a tape drive with the cassette tape on a disk. It's like a really fast cassette deck.

Quick disk was used for several systems, for example MSX and electronic typewriters.

It's the same system than Nintendo's Famicom Disk System. Disks are not changeable between them due to Nintendo made fisical changes on disk's plastic case.

I thought many time ago about a project, adapting QD disk case to be used both on MSX and Famicom Disk , and then using MSX to store and write Famicom Disk System game images (using Sunrise IDE or SD Card Adapter). I think about creating a MSX program to write on a Quick Disk a Famicom Disk Game , reading it from an image stored on SD Card. And finally this written disk, plug it on a Famicom Disk System and play the game.

Sometimes Famicom Disk games are partially deleted, so the game don't work and disks must be rewritten. It was a typical failure and disavantage for Famicom Disk System. Those days, Nintendo made machines on Japan, put on coffes and public places, for rewrite damaged Famicom Disk Systems games. I have a game so, don't work because data inside is partially deleted. It would be wonderful to use a MSX for re-writing Famicom Disk System games.

I seem to recall hearing that there were snap-on (or glue-on) adapters available to enable the Famicom Disk System to use regular Quick Disks.

I remmber this. Compared to diskettes its a very pain in the....

The QD disks may be impossible to find, I remember I had a system like this, but not QD disks, and back in 1990's I remember pay more then 12 euro per piece and there was 10 in a box....

You format it like a diskette, if I dont remember wrong it can handle 170kb or so. It have directory but you can only delete and modify the last file on the disk. So if you want to modify the first saved program you have to remove the other files first. better than tape, but a diskdrive was better, today a sdcard interface might be the right think
