We all remember when sadly Kralizec quit developing for MSX giving us a very special goodbye present. Anyway it does not mean Ramones and Sutchan left the MSX scene. Today we can inform you about the new work of this team, keep in mind not under the Kralizec label, with the help of José Ángel Morente. The enhanced versions of Auf Wiedersehen Monty (Gremlin Graphics) and Batman(Ocean) in ROM format.

We have all suffered together the Spectrum ports in the past and their handicaps such as controls, playability, etc. That ended as a result of the improvements they implemented. Here we have the main optimizations.

Auf Wiedersehen Monty

  • 50Hz/60Hz mode.
  • R800 mode.
  • Cursor keys control.
  • Save states mode.
  • Palette improvements for MSX2.

Batman

  • 50Hz/60Hz mode.
  • R800 mode.
  • Save states mode.

A .TXT file is attached for both games with further information.

On BLUEMSX they don't start.
Boot OK
Loader OK
Screen Loader and it's fade: OK for Batman, NO for Monty
Both of them don't start

Well, I do like the new MSX2 pallette of the loading screen already! Smile but I can't get past the loading screen. Crying

In order to work on BLUEMSX, change the ROM mapper setting to ASCII 8
(the emulator guesses the ROM as an ASCII 16 mapper).
Is this Auf Wiedersehen Monty version winnable? Never heard of anybody winning the original MSX version. I myself got all the cash, completed all the missions and got only 2/3 of the island.

Well, I'd like to clarify that, although I helped make this Auf Wiedersehen version (I wrote the new keyboard routine), I haven't been involved in the Batman patch development.

Thank you anyway for your review :-)

About the BlueMSX or OpenMSX: although they work fine (just select the right mapper), these ROMs are intended to be run on a real MSX machine. The save state feature doesn't make sense on an emulator since it already has implemented such as feature.

Back in the days I found Monty a nice game to play (as in: walk through the countries) but I had no idea about its purpose. Must have been a Gremlin specific quirk: also the goal of Jack the Nipper 2 wasn't clear to me. Things like using airports and objects could have been explained a bit better...

My original version also had a bug: after walking around Austria for some time, first the ski lift level became slightly corrupted (as in: the lift cable became blocky instead of a straight line) and then, after jumping across these cable blocks (!), the level to the right of it was completely corrupted. Is that a known bug or did I have a bad tape?

This game is much more playable and interesting when you know what to do.

I hope this manual is useful ;-)

@ Zezus: Thanks!

@ warau: That is cool! Much thanks!
I have a full map by the way, made by someone who apparently played it through, But I don't have a scanner. If there is interest, I will either try to scan it somewhere, or try to reproduce.

@ warau
Nice! Smile But I remember a map with a description, like, give this item to this dude, go with this item there. I'll try to find it! And then I'll translate it, because it was in Dutch.

Note that the mapper is detected correctly by openMSX for Monty: ASCII 8kB. But for Batman it is detected as Konami MegaROM. However, it seems to work fine at first sight...

Tried on OPEN and on BLUE with the right romtype setup.
They both start.
Monty: doesn't move by arrow keys or other keys.
BatMan: keep on moving up by himself !!!

Anyway, nice job. Waiting to try it on my realMSX.
Ops, I haven't a MegaFlash: is there a working EXECROM with rom of 64k ?
Maybe a disk version ?

Regards

I just tried on OpenMSX 0.10.1 and it works perfectly.

What version of OpenMSX are you using?

I think it should work with EXECROM as well and no, there isn't (and there won't be) a disk version. One of the reasons to release this version is to focus on the ROM format and to avoid the DSK release (we don't like it).

In short: You have to steal stuff from the various countries and then bring them to certain places. You must get tickets to be able to fly. To fly, I think you had to press Control -key while standing at the airport. You cannot choose where to fly, certain airport will always send you to certain other airport. 1980s politics are also taken in account in this game. You will lose your tickets at certain airport. Also, try to travel to the wrong side of Berlin Wall... Wink About Hrothgar´s bug, I never got such a bug and I played Auf Wiedersehen Monty a Lot, from original tape. Maybe that bug relates to the fact, that that ski lift acts realistically just like ski lifts will do in the real life, ie. you will fall to your death, if it´s not repaired first.

Does anyone have the txt file for the Batman ROM?

I can only get the "'R' key to change CPU -----> 'H' key to change Hertz --->" to show when emulating a Turbo R and just the "'H' key to change Hertz --->" if emulating an MSX2 or higher.

How do you activate the cheats and the palette(other than pressing P or C as these don't work.)?
