Hi, just joined today, hoping to get some beginners advice for the system. I have been considering buying an MSX2 as there have been a few for cheap on eBay out of Japan lately, and I've seen the versions of Castlevania and the Metal Gear games, and seen the homebrews out there and am a bit captivated. Unfortunately there seems to be a slight learning curve compared to other gaming consoles. I, to start out, would simply like to play some of these great games in English on a real system. The consoles I'm looking at are MSX2 but have no FDD, so will the lack of floppy drive hinder me from playing many significant games which have been English translated? Also, I'd like to eventually buy or make some nice repros of games and buy some brews, but to start I'd like to have something like an everdrive to load roms onto to play some of the classics from the start. The model I'm considering is a Panasonic FS-A1, what would I need aside from the main console in order to get started playing it? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Welcome!

Sounds like you need something like the MegaFlashROM SCC+ SD, to play most ROM games having the option to play bilingual games in English and also capable of emulating a floppy drive so you can play disk images.

Enjoy!

our wiki article on Flash storage cartridges is a good place to read up on the various solutions available.
I'd love to get an MSX Cartridge Shop's MegaFlashROM SCC SD card myself, but with how little I currently use my MSX2 and since I already have a Sunrise CompactFlash interface, the costs just aren't worth it to me. :(

The FS-A1 is an MSX turboR rather than an MSX2 btw. Wink
Not that is a bad thing; on the contrary, as it is more powerful, lol.
It should have a disk drive afaik, and if it's not working, it's likely a drive belt that needs replacing.

Ignore me, I'm ignorant Tongue

The FS-A1 is a nice little machine, but it's not a turboR

And a non-ST model, a non-F model, a non-FM model, a non-FX model, a non-WSX model and a non-WX model Tongue

Thanks for the comments everyone. I did read a bit about the megaflashROM and thought that might take care of it, but wasn't sure if there were other alternatives, but I suppose that is the premier trusted one to use then? I appreciate the mention of gr8net as an option, can't seem to find them on sale though, would I need to contact the maker directly you think? I would be interested to know if it was at all more affordable if available.

Yes, for GR8NET contact developer directly. At the moment, it is superior to megaflashrom, because it also supports MSX-MUSIC, MSX-AUDIO, MP3, ETHERNET and more Smile

At the moment, it is available and costs are around 150 euro shipping included, I think. Yes, it's a bit more expensive than megaflashrom, but you get many extras.
