The Philips machines don't need a step down transformer as they are rated at 220v, the Panasonic machines do need a step down transformer but it's no problem! At least one British msx 1 (the jvc) had a SCART connection.
There were some msx2 machines around in the UK back in the day, I can remember a few specialist dealers that imported them.
There had to be some official imports, as some MSX2 games were reviewed in UK magazines. Well, at least one : "The Games Machine", in its 12/1987 issue reviewed Vampire Killer (69%) and Metal Gear (79%).

Which MSX2 did they have?
Here are the official released MSX2 systems you could encounter in mainland Europe at the time.
- Philips VG8230, VG8235, NMS8220, NMS 8245, NMS8250, NMS8255, NMS8280
- Sony HB-F9(P/S), HB-F500(P/F/D?), HB-F700(P/F/S/D), HB-G900(P/F/D/AP)
- Pioneer UV-V102 (hidden MSX, supposedly released WW)
- Daewoo CPC-300 (with AVT branding, in the Netherlands but never actually released)
- Phonola VG8235, NMS8245, NMS8280 (Italy only)
- Toshiba FS-TM1 (Italy only)
- Fenner FPC-900 (Italy only)
- Mitsubishi ML-G1 and ML-G3 (Spain only)
- Laser MSX2 (France only, and only 2 units known to exist)
- PTC MSX PC (ISA card, made by Philips released by the PTC group in the NL)
It was definitely a Philips, I can't remember the model though. There is an article about it within the pages of one of the issues of "the games machine".
Just looking back through some old magazines and fanzines and it looks like the msx2 that 'the games machine' magazine had donated to them after the theft of their machine was a Philips 8220 and was donated to them by nightdare of torquay. The games machine magazine actually did a review on msx2 in the summer of 1988. Having done a little research i think that there were at least 4 companies that sold msx2 in the UK, Philips and Sony machines were available. I think that nightdare even sold msx2+machines.
