The first game I ever played on my MSX (around 1985) was Level 9's 'Colossal Adventure'. Although I still have my boxed cassette version, it refuses to load. I was therefore hoping to play it in an emulator, but have not been able to find a .cas image of it anywhere.

I am not looking for the 2nd version with graphics that was released as part of the 'The Jewels Of Darkness' trilogy, but their original text-only version. Does anyone know if this is available anywhere?

I'm afraid we can't post any links here. This is against MRC policies.
But can you check your e-mail? Smile

Hi tfh. Though the game you found is the original Colossal Adventure, it's the Level9 version I am looking for - but many thanks for the e-mail. Smile

The really frustrating thing is that I have my original Level9 cassette but cannot get it to load. Unfortunately my MSX hardware has been stored in a [sometimes extremely hot] loft for the last 35 years, so I've no idea whether it's the cassette, the player, the lead or the interface inside the computer which is at fault.

If I can work out how to convert a WAV file into a CAS file I'll have a go myself so I can play it via an emulator. Are there any guidelines I should follow regarding volume-levels/sample-rates etc. when recording?

Aha... So I was close, but not close enough ;-)
If you do end up with a working version some day, please e-mail me a copy so I can add it to my downloadsite and preserve it for future generations.

Added it to https://www.msx.org/wiki/List_of_undumped_MSX_software

If you can get a WAV recording try make it 8-bit mono at 44mHz then use either SofaCAS or CASTools 1.3 with the MSXCASToolsGui. Volume level of the cassette player should be between 6-8.

There is Jewels Of Darkness Colossal Adventure v2 dumped to CAS format out there but I guess that's not the version you're looking for.

It seems that the version I sent to chalky is a CP/M port of the original version and was never released as a commercial title, so... if you want to download this version:

https://download.file-hunter.com/Games/MSX1/DSK/Colossal%20C...

Now let's hope we can somehow preserve the Level 9 version.

OK... it seems that even the MRC URL Encoder can't always solve the problems with the URL's on this forum.

OpenMSX loads WAV files directly, no need to convert to CAS.
