We all know how huge the MSX computers family is with many different models from several manufacturers. Despite the MSX system was conceived as a standard, every model has its own peculiarities mainly at hardware level. If we talk about sound output, every MSX machine is almost different, even some models show certain problems due to bad circuit designs causing a noticiable unbalance between the present sound sources. This is where MSX SOUND ENHANCER, a new hardware device by the Japanese developer Lost Technology, comes onto the scene. With this new expansion cartridge we can deal with these problems acting, in few words, as a sound mixer. The main features are:

  • Equipped with real sound source chips (PSG and FM) on the board.
  • Compatible with existing software (generally).
  • PSG/OPLL/SCC volume can be set independently.
  • Improved voice characteristics that are different for each model.
  • Pseudo-stereo with surround processor installed.
  • Achieves high sound quality by supplying external power (AC adapter sold separately).
  • Sound source master clock can be supplied from the outside (optional).
  • OPLL family such as YMF281 and YM2423 can be driven by existing software (optional).

MSX SOUND SOURCE is already on sale through Kenchan for the price of ¥23,800 (around 180 €) or ¥12,480 (around 95 €) for the kit version.

Okay, trying to understand what all this is. It seems to have both DIP and SMD YM2413B / YM2413B-F which you can select between with jumpers. It has the YMZ294 PSG but for SCC you connect an original SCC cartridge to the sub board, right?

Basicly its a soundmixer that has all the soundsources on board. Because it is fed from the outside, less humm and less other artefacts from bad power supply. This is your fix if you don't like the sound/balance of sound of your msx.

Slot 1 of a Sony MSX2+ is deeper than many other all-in-one machines, so it will probably fit in most. However I do wonder how heavy this beast is and what will support it if it's not placed in a Sony... Looks fragile.
Probably better to build it in a case with a cable to an interface cartridge.

Almost accurate understanding.
Also it has pseudo-stereo feature, but You may have different preferences about this.

That's exactly what you said. The board size is designed for SONY machines. The back of the board is reinforced with an acrylic plate, so we believe it will not be a problem for daily use.

Already sold out in both assembled and kit versions, it seems? In any case this looks like an amazing piece of audio hardware and I hope more will be made

Is the socket at the cartridge's top end a pass-through cartridge slot with audio-out mixing control?

Now preparing next batch. Hopefully we will be able to release it in late April.

Yes. The pass-through slot is intended to hold an SCC cartridge, but of course other sound cartridges can be mounted instead. It has also a function to inhibit the ROM on the pass-through slot during power-on, by the short-pin on its sub-board.
