Stuck in Hydlide

I'm at the big island of the two, and there are two wizards running around like there's no tomorrow (OMG what a nervous game is this!). According to the NES walk-throughs on gamespot I need to kill them using a Wave Magic to get the third fairy, but I don't think the MSX version has that, does it? Meanwhile I can kill them the normal way, but they keep respawning.

Does anyone know how to solve this in the MSX(2)-version?

Is this Hydlide 1? I've finished it, but I don't recall your exact situation. Can you post some screenshots?

Yes, it's the first one in the series.

I'm afraid the game is flip-screen, so this is the situation, but the screenshot doesn't reveal much.

Well, as suggested by Randam on IRC I let myself get shot five or six times and then killed one of the wizards when he was next to the other one. That gave me the fairy and transported me to the other island.

Fair enough I suppose.

Ah, yes. I can't remember how I figured that out. Probably just sheer luck.
