From several MSX games, most or all music can be heard in isolation. This is both enjoyable for people who like to listen to these tunes without having to play the game, and for composers/arrangers who want to make a correct cover of all or some of the music. Some games feature prominent or hidden music players, other games have been hacked and the music was put into a BGM player on MSX, or on PC. In the early demo scene, incidental game tunes served as music behind demos, due to the lack of a successful music tool - this was eventually solved with the release of FAC Soundtracker. The tables below feature complete BGM players for one or more games, not MSX demos featuring an incidental song.
Several players for hacked music as well as official collections have been published in the past:
- MSX
- Micro Music, Micro Cabin music player TSR by F. Hilderink
- Cabin Times, disk B in the Xak the Tower of Gazzel package
- Imagine, a music player by Black Label
- Imagine II, a music player by Black Label
- Konmouse, a music player by Ramon van der Winkel
- Martos, there are various simple BGM players for several of Martos' cracked Konami ROMs. These are simple text mode players where each keyboard key features a song or sound effect
- Disc Station Special 1 - Spring Edition, issue of diskmagazine by Compile featuring the soundtracks from Aleste and Golvellius 2
- non-MSX
- Hoot, a Windows player by SNESmusic.org (Hoot), requires you to download game music packs seperately
- KSS, a plug-in format (KSS), requires you to download game music packs seperately
- KSSg, a Windows player by F.Groen. Its real name is KSS, but since there's also the plug-in with the same name, for clarity it'll feature an added 'g' in its name, referring to the last name of the author.
- MMP, a Windows player by F.Groen. Doesn't appear to be working correctly (it's not usable) in Windows 7/64.
All MSX players have the advantage that all individual channels can be exported using openMSX's channel exporter. KSSg features a channel exporter too, though only one by one, and only for its own pack of games.
