Introduction

Clubguide Picturedisk was a bi-monthly disk magazine filled with demos, promos and news from the MSX demo scene. Its audience was international though most of its contents was made by Dutch groups and individuals.

Clubguide Picturedisk 08 was released in April 1991 by Genic. This diskmagazine was also sold as MCM Public Domain disk B43. The general design has been conceived by the Redsoft team, with help from Shadow and FAC.

The interface and all parts of this demodisk are for MSX2 and higher. However, see section about the musical files.

This demodisk comes with original musics in the FAC Soundtracker 1 format for these parts: Frequency Selector, Menu, MK Reclame Demo, intro of Squeek Promo and News. For the menu, the musics are different according the computer will use the MSX-AUDIO or the MSX-MUSIC chip, with priority to the MSX-AUDIO chip when both chips are present.

Content

Frequency Selector

Cpd08 freq.png

The Sentinal and The Extreme have created a frequency selector featuring a wide horizontal wave on the numbers 50 and 60.

Menu

Cpd08 menu.png

Shadow has created a menu in shape of a platform game. Each door contains content.

It's not possible to go to a door immediately by pressing a key so the game really has to be played to reach all doors. This issue would be fixed in the menu of Clubguide Picturedisk 11.

The player can only walk, fall and climb ladders, it's not possible to jump. When standing still, the player character starts doing random things, fiddling with himself.

The map of this menu can be found here.

Theatre

Cpd08 theatre.png

A very pinky demo, created by The Shadow, another nick for Shadow. It features moving stars, a 3D checker floor, a scrolling text and MSX-MUSIC.

Flash (DD-Snatch)

Cpd08 ddsnatch2.png
Cpd08 ddsnatch1.png

The third Dynamic Duo SCC demo with music ripped from SD-Snatcher. It has two parts, first a classical scroll with messages and greetings, then a somewhat controversial second part.

A cartridge with SCC/SCC+ soundchip or compatible is required to fully enjoy it. SCC Konami cartridges are usable but remember: Do not insert a cartridge with the MSX turned on!!!. However, safe options exist:

  • slotexpanders with switches
  • SCC cartridges modified with switch or converted to Megasram (aka ESE-RAM)
  • use an MSX emulator

MK Reclame Demo

Cpd08 fac2.png
Cpd08 fac1.png

A promotion of the FAC productions with MSX-AUDIO melody. One of the few advertisement demos that really looks like a commercial. Other demos usually promoted a product while there was still a regular demo attached to it. Not this one.

You can also notice that the used FST driver (FSTMK.BIN) corresponds to version 1.1 (announced on the intro screen, but will be replaced by version 2.0)

Squeek Promo

Cpd08 squeek2.png
Cpd08 squeek1.png

The first Squeek promo by ANMA. Squeek is a clone of Konami's Penguin Adventure, enhanced with MSX-MUSIC or PSG melodies.

This promo works only on MSX2 and higher, but the concerned action game is also for MSX1.

Three parts: an intro with an original scroll, a waving logo and MSX-MUSIC, a stage of the game in demo mode, an advertisement screen.

Direct launching: RUN"SQ-DEMO.LDR"

News

Musical files

Here's the list of files to optionally put on a dedicated FAC Soundtracker 1 music disk:

Notes:

  • CGP8MUSI.BIN is actually a special looping version of the FST.BIN driver
  • HYDRAULI.MUS needs to be extracted from SQ-DEMO3.BIN and adapted

If you don't use the interface of this demodisk, FAC Soundtracker, Pro Tracker, Studio FM, MIDI Blaster or the FM Music interface, these musical files can be used on MSX1.

For more tips about usage of this musical format, check the FAC Music Disk 1 Wiki page.
