Description

Yamaha YM2149 chip

The YM2149 is a clone of the AY-3-8910 designed by Yamaha and licensed in the 80s. This chip is used in several MSX1 and MSX2 computers.

Yamaha calls this chip SSG (Software-controlled Sound Generator) instead of PSG in its documents.

The main difference between the YM2149 and AY-3-8910 is that the internal volume control of the D/A converter has 32 levels instead of 16, so the hardware envelope is more smooth. The sound produced is slightly more clear at times. Moreover the YM2149 consumes less than AY-3-8910. Power consumption is 200mW max.
